1. How do I know you're not secretly stealing my passwords?
An excellent question. As soon as you push the "OK" button when adding a password to password wallet, your data is immediately encrypted. The only way for the data to be unlocked is with your password, which only you know.
Although for you to be sure, I can only give you my word that my software makes no attempt to save your password to a secret place, or transfer it somewhere over the Internet without your knowledge. In a way, you just have to trust me.
In addition, if I were to steal your passwords, a clever user would certainly figure it out and that would be really bad for business. And I haven't done all of this work just to throw it all away on something like this. :-)
The only place your "master" password can be stored is in the Mac OS X Keychain, but this can be turned off very easily. |
2. My "master" wallet password is stored in Keychain. I remember my Keychain password, but I've forgotten my master wallet password. How can I get my wallet password?
Using the "Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access.app", navigate to the wallet item you want a password for, double click it, and press "View Password". You will be prompted for your master Keychain password, and then you will be shown your master wallet password. |
3. My bookmarklet does not appear to be exporting correctly to my Safari bookmarks.
First, let's not get confused. A bookmarklet is an encrypted web page that is specially encoded in the URL portion of a bookmark. We also call this the WebKit version of PasswordWallet. This is not the same as the native iPhone version of PasswordWallet.
Sometimes when bookmarkletsIt are exported to Safari they get stuck... Meaning they can not be overwritten. The only way to export a new bookmarklet is to delete the old one first. You can delete the old bookmarklet right from inside Safari's bookmarks screen. |
4. Where are my documents so I can back them up?
Your passwordwallet data is just stored in Documents files on your hard drive, like a TexEdit.app or Microsoft Word document.
To find where your PasswordWallet documents are:
- Open each document in PasswordWallet.
- Command-click in the titlebar of the document window.
- Drag down to the folder that contains your document.
The file revealed in the Finder is the one you want to back up. |
5. How do I control the bullets that show when I click the disclosure triangle on an item?
Bullets can be controlled (toggled) with the "Show Bullets" menu item from the "Wallet" menu.
There are also bullet settings under General and Timings preferences. |
6. How do I move PasswordWallet to a new computer?
To move your data to a new computer we recommend using Apple's Migration Assistant.
Otherwise all you have to do is move (1) the PasswordWallet application and (2) your PasswordWallet data to the new computer.
The PasswordWallet application should be in your Applications folder of your old computer. If you can't find it you'll have to download another copy from the PasswordWallet Web Site
Your PasswordWallet data is stored wherever you saved it. If you don't know where this is:
- Run PasswordWallet on your old computer and open your data file.
- Hold down the command-key on your keyboard.
- Click in the title bar of the PasswordWallet window (where the name of your file appears.)
- Drag to the folder containing your data file.

7. My bank web site wants username on one page and password on another. How can I auto-type between two pages?
PasswordWallet normally auto-types username, tab, password. Auto-typing your username and password on to separate pages is easy!
First, open the record in PasswordWallet for the entry of interest. Then, position the cursor at the end of the username field (or the end of the password field). Then, from the menu at the right, insert a "Pause-Resume" character.
When PasswordWallet encounters this character it will finish auto-typing your username and then start a new auto-typing for the password page. Just push the option-key to "resume" auto-typing! |
8. When I launch a URL from PasswordWallet it always wants to launch Parallels and not the browser I have specified in the wallet entry.
Parallels has somehow made changes to your Launch Services database. The Launch Services database is where Mac OS X stores information about what programs should open a given URL.
To remedy this, you need to search on Google for instructions to "reset launch services database". We can't support this directly as the reset operation is not condoned by Apple. |
9. Can you help me with Synchronizing my iPhone?
Yes, but not in this FAQ. Please try the link below for help with synchronizing to the native iPhone version available from the app store:
http://www.selznick.com/products/passwordwallet/mac/synchronization.htm
And bookmarklet export that saves your data to your Safari bookmarks on your iPhone:

10. PasswordWallet prompts me to save my file even when I haven't made any changes.
There are two preferences that control this. They're both in the Preferences → General tab, under "File Modifications" Turn off these two preferences:
- Update Last Modified date when opening a document.
- Record date and time when accessing an entry.

11. Where's my data? I can't find my Passwords!
PasswordWallet stores all of its data in documents on your hard drive. You created this file and saved it to some folder when you first ran PasswordWallet. We do not know where you put this file.
This file may be your Default File (as defined in Preferences → General.) PasswordWallet sets your default file as you save a file when no default file is set. So to reset your default file you can clear it and then save a document.
Your data may be in your Documents folder or even on a server you are not connected to.
If you can't find your file, try doing a search on your system for "passwordWallet4". This is the PasswordWallet file extension. |
12. Is it safe to store my "master" password to my PasswordWallet in Mac OS's Keychain?
Yes. But don't forget to lock your keychain! When your keychain is unlocked your wallet will be unlocked. |
13. Keychain is presenting a dialog even if I have instructed PasswordWallet to not do this.
Before PasswordWallet can access a document's password from the Keychain, the PasswordWallet software must communicate to the system and tell it that it needs the access to the Keychain. This communication sometimes brings up Keychain dialogs, all presented by the system, not PasswordWallet.
However, if you click "Always Allow" when asked, the dialog should never appear again. |
14. Is PasswordWallet available yet for Palm OS?
Yes! Be sure to visit our Palm PasswordWallet Web Page! |
15. How do I change what browser my URL opens in?
In each entry is a popup menu where you can select a browser to open a URL with. If this value is not set, the system default is used. |
16. Why doesn't my PasswordWallet document open when I double-click PasswordWallet?
PasswordWallet has a preference where you can select your default file. This can be found from the "PasswordWallet" menu, in "Preferences", in the General tab. If you do not define a default file, the first file you save will be set as your default file. |
17. How do I have PasswordWallet open an SSH session for me?
In the URL field place: ssh://username@yourserver.com. Then, leave PasswordWallet's username field blank and only fill in the password field. The password will be the only thing that will be Auto-typed. |
18. How do I remove my master password for my file from the Mac OS X Keychain?
Just change your master password from the "Wallet" menu, uncheck "Save in Keychain" and push "OK". You can change your master password to the same password as your old password. |
19. I lost my password! How can I gain access to my PasswordWallet?
There is no way to gain access to your PasswordWallet if you lost your password. Sorry! |
20. Do you know any hackers that can help me break into my PasswordWallet?
No. |
21. What's the longest password length?
Password lengths may not exceed 73 characters. This is the maximum length for which Selznick Scientific Software, LLC has been granted by the United States Department of Commerce. |
22. Can PasswordWallet insert usernames and passwords directly into my web pages?
Yes! Using PasswordWallet's auto-typing technology, your usernames and passwords can be typed virtually anywhere on the system. Please see instructions for auto-typing from the Help menu within PasswordWallet. It's pretty easy. And addictive. :-) |
23. Why when I auto-type the username is typed but the Password isn't?
PasswordWallet moves the cursor from the Username field to the Password field by typing a "tab" character. If there is a button between these fields, and you have your system settings turned on to allow tabbing to buttons, this will not work. To fix this, you can either specify extra tab key characters within your password, or turn off this option.
To the right of the username and password fields within PasswordWallet there is a popup menu that can insert the characters that designate tabs, returns, and other goodies. |
